The National Professional Development Center (NPDC) on Autism Spectrum Disorder has identified 27 evidence-based practices for improving outcomes for students with ASD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Exercise<\/td>\nScripting<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Five of these interventions\u2014(1) reinforcement<\/b>; (2) prompting<\/b>; (3) time <\/b>delay<\/b>; (4) modeling<\/b>; and (5) task analysis<\/b> reflect the building blocks of ABA and, therefore, are sometimes referred to as foundational strategies.<\/p>\n

Reinforcement<\/b> \u2013 Positive reinforcement\u00a0involves providing a desired consequence (e.g., a tangible item, access to an activity, or social reward\/praise) after a student engages in a desired behavior.<\/p>\n

Prompting<\/b> \u2013 Using a prompt to assist a student when he is learning a new skill or behavior to help improve his chances of success.<\/p>\n

  • Gesture\u2014Includes pointing at or touching an object<\/li>\n
  • Verbal cue\u2014Includes verbal hints and directions<\/li>\n
  • Visual cue\u2014Includes illustrations, photos, and objects<\/li>\n
  • Modeling\u2014Includes demonstrating or showing a child how to perform a skill<\/li>\n
  • Physical\u2014Includes physically directing or touching a child to help him perform a behavior or skill (Note that this is especially useful for teaching motor skills)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Time Delay <\/b>\u2013 A means of systematically providing and then fading prompts. When teaching a new behavior or skill, the teacher prompts the child and then immediately provides the correct response (e.g., \u201cWhat is this? A dog.\u201d). Then the teacher increases the time between the prompt and the student\u2019s response using a constant time delay or progressive time delay.<\/p>\n

    Modeling<\/b> – Demonstrating how to perform a skill or behavior correctly prior to asking the student to perform the behavior. \u00a0A visual demonstration can also be used to prompt a student after he or she has been asked to perform a skill or behavior.<\/p>\n

    Task Analysis <\/b>\u2013 A\u00a0<\/b>method of breaking multi-step skills or behaviors into smaller components that can be taught one at a time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
